As a cancer patient, I knew there were some huge ups and downs on the way, I knew I needed to stay positive through cancer somehow and I wanted to be ready for it! I researched some ways to stay positive and also why staying positive physically helps! The strategies really helped me and hope they help you too!
Staying positive through cancer is so important, I have read article after article about how it can help you get better faster! Here is just one article I found! It makes all the difference to your well being. Staying positive and happy actually affects the biochemistry of your body. A stressful or bad day releases adrenaline and cortisol into your system which has a negative effect on your body in a range of ways. Being positive, happy and laughing however, releases dopamines, seratonin and oxytocin which actually heal your body. So staying positive heals you from within and sets you on the road of recovery much faster!
Power Book Of Positivity
As I say in the video, go and buy a notebook that you just love and start filling it up with every positive thing you can so that you can open it when you are going through a rough patch and be reminded of all the great things in your life. When I put on my Facebook that I had breast cancer, I had a flood of really lovely messages from friends all over the world, I was shocked and humbled by the outpour! I then picked the most utterly lovely messages and wrote them out in the front of my notebook and they really pick me up when I’m down!
At the back I list everything I’m grateful for in my life and when I think of a new thing I jot it in. Everything big or small goes in, so that I can build a long list to look over when I need it! Being grateful for things in your life is calming and brings a great energy all of its own so is well worth doing.
In the middle of the note book I journal EVERYTHING. All the emotions, all of the feelings, all of the thoughts and fears go in here. This gets rid of these thoughts from my head, it gives them somewhere to go and they stop going round and round in my head being re-lived! It helps clear my mind and settles things down. Plus one day you will be able to look back on it and think “Wow, I went through so much back then!”
Surround Yourself With Positivity
You are a product of your environment and the average of the sum of the people you spend the most time with.
“Show Me Your Friends and I’ll Show You Your Future” – By: Chaplain Ronnie Melancon
Get around positive people and cut out the negative ones, avoid the people who drag you down. Surround your self with people who you care about and who care about you. Great people will lift you up and make you feel great, this will help your whole well being. I have met some great people on the chemo ward and groups where others have cancer too, as we are all going through the same thing.
Switch off the News and put on something funny instead. Laughter really is the best medicine as it releases all the great biochemistry your body needs and makes you feel much better than the awful news you hear on the TV. I keep in touch with the news but I hardly watch or read it and I feel so much better for it! We just don’t need that negativity right now! You can feel the weight of the world, but choose to be happy anyway.
Surround yourself with your favorite things. I used to only wear my favorite perfume and jewelry on special occasions, but now I wear it all the time. I don’t save it for special occasions anymore, every new day is a special occasion and should be treated as a celebration! Why not?
Find your Joy! Make sure you can shift your state of mind on the bad days, invest your time in something that really makes you happy. This needs to be something you really enjoy doing that will snap you out of the lowest of lows. It’s individual for everyone so what is it for you?
For me it’s grooming a horse (a friends horse, I don’t need to go out and buy my own, although that sounds like a fantastic idea!) or putting a good Beyonce song on and singing my heart out! Going for a cream tea somewhere or just going for a walk in a nice place. What do you love to do? It may even be a childhood hobby you haven’t done in years? Get back to it! Now is the time to focus on yourself for once and really do some self-care. I am very guilty of putting myself last all the time and that needs to change!
Sing! It has been proven that singing in a choir or group for an hour improves the immune system and your well-being! There are many studies into this and they are mounting the evidence that it has a great cancer-fighting effect and helps people stay n remission. Even if you don’t think you can sing, in a big group you will not feel self-conscious and will reap the benefits just by singing with everyone there!
Accept The Situation
It is not the circumstances we find ourselves in that define us, it is how we show up in the face of them that does. It is so important to take a step back and take stock of what is happening in our present moment in life, and truly accept what that is. Don’t let the memories from the past or made up projections in the future cloud the present, because that is where the seeds of any negativity creep in. Truly accept what is happening now and own where we really are, because the only thing we have any control over is ourselves in the present moment. All the rest is an artificial reality.
Everything in life is temporary. Don’t allow this temporary setback or illness to transform you into someone you are not. For me, my example right now, is that I have Cancer, but it does not have me, and it never will! I choose to show up in life and make my own choices, because how we choose to show up in the face of circumstances each time, is all we truly have.
I really recommend this book for helping you here, you will never see anything the same again. It helps you move through any pain and see things for what they really are
Reduce The Stress
Meditation, just taking a deep breath, yoga, reading, exercising and listening to music all really help in healing the body and just giving you more positive outlook to stay positive through cancer. it gives you that time out so let your thoughts sort themselves out. UNPLUG! don’t spend the whole time on your phone or listening to podcasts, your brain needs to think the thoughts it needs to think! You don’t need to be told what to think all the time, what is your little voice trying to tell you but you keep blocking out? Give this voice a little space and time, allow her to come though and things will all become so much clearer. You will sleep better for it
You will sleep better for it too! If your brain is the kind to switch on at night and keep you awake, this is because it isn’t getting the time to think the thoughts it needs to think in the day time! Make the bedroom a tech free zone, take a bath with just you and some candles or meditate for just 20 minutes a day. These may be small differences, but they might make all the difference. Focus on yourself for once, this time of healing is all about you. What have you not been doing enough of for yourself recently?
Coujour Up A Bright Future
I am finding that the effects of chemo don’t just hit me physically but mentally as well, I can hit some real lows at times and it takes all of my tricks to pull me back out again! It can be really tough to stay positive through cancer at times! One thing that really helps is visualising the future I want to manifest. I know it sounds silly, but just taking some time to dream a little really helps. Take this time to take a step back and evaluate things. if you are anything like me, cancer has brought a huge perspective shift and I see everything a little differently now. Things I used to really push for, really don’t matter as much anymore.
Sit back and think what you want your life to look like in 1, 2 and 5 years time. Many people expect to change too much in one year but underestimate what they can achieve in 5 years. So what would your ideal life look like? Picture an ideal day. Where would you live? Who with? Living in perfect health and cancer free would be at number 1 of course! Then think about not just material things, but how you want to feel when you wake up. What do you do for a living? Who would you be helping? Write it all down and set this as your goal. Think about it every day and the universe will pull things together to make it happen for you.
It all sounds a little “rainbows and unicorns” I know, but it is so important!! It creates a great feeling of well being, gives you a direction and something to draw you forward in life. Write it down as if it has already happened in the present. “I am so happy and grateful today because….” then write your dream, what you want to manifest. Finish it with “Please make this or something better happen in ways that are for the highest good of me and of all concerned” and see what happens. It is all in the book “How to make lots of Money for anything fast”, by Stuart Lichtman and Joe Vitale.
Find Your Direction
I know how hard it can be to stay positive through cancer, I felt lost sometimes, but another thing I found a huge help was having a structured online course that helps me thrive and be the best me I can be. It really helps me stay in a positive place. I was so thankful I found these mentors before I was diagnosed, they really helped give me a direction and kept me in a positive place. It is a great distraction, somewhere I can better myself and just take my mind off of everything by doing something constructive. I really don’t know where I would be without them!
I am so guilty of putting myself last so often, but if I don’t take care of myself (now more than ever) who will take care of everyone else? Do all that you need to do to get better now, you are needed, you are loved and you are enough!! Don’t let any stories your head or anyone else cooks up make you doubt it! Stay positive and we will get through all of this as quickly as we can! Onwards and upwards and you will be living the perfect day you visualised above before you know it!
